The Anglerfish That Went to See the Sun

About a week ago an Anglerfish started swimming to the surface of the ocean, which is not common at all. They are born and live in the dark. I just cannot get over it. I am so emotional. It is so beautiful and moving. I encourage you to reflect on your life.

It left me in shambles and questioning everything I have ever known. So much courage, hope, and love wrapped into a story. Enjoy. And as always, seriously, thank you so much for supporting me.

In the deepest parts of the ocean, where light never reaches, the anglerfish exists in a world of darkness. It has adapted to the abyss, carrying its own small light—a bioluminescent lure—to survive in a place where the sun is just a distant, impossible myth. And yet, for the first time ever, one anglerfish did the unthinkable: it swam to the surface.

It was an event that left researchers in awe. A creature meant for the depths, its entire existence shaped by darkness, made its way upward—toward warmth, toward light, toward the sky. It did not survive the journey, but perhaps it was never meant to. Perhaps it had one last desire, one final act of defiance against the life it had always known.

The Beauty of the Unthinkable

There is something undeniably poetic about this moment. How often do we, too, live in spaces that feel confined, surrounded by our own form of darkness? How often do we convince ourselves that the world above—whether that means happiness, peace, or freedom—is unreachable? Yet, the anglerfish reminds us that even in the face of the impossible, there is still a choice.

We can rise.

We can see the sun.

Even if only for a moment.

A Metaphor for Hope

The anglerfish’s journey is heartbreaking, but it is also hopeful. It reminds us that we are not bound to the circumstances we were born into. Even if we have spent a lifetime in the depths, we can still choose to move toward something greater. Even if the journey is difficult, even if it changes everything, there is beauty in the act of seeking.

And maybe that’s the point. Maybe life isn’t just about surviving in the dark—it’s about daring to dream of the light, even if it feels far away.

So, what is your sun?

What have you convinced yourself is unreachable? What light have you buried beneath doubt, fear, or the weight of the life you’ve always known? Maybe it’s love. Maybe it’s healing. Maybe it’s the courage to finally chase something you’ve always wanted but never believed you could have.

The anglerfish didn’t belong in the light, but it swam toward it anyway. And for one brief, breathtaking moment, it saw the world beyond its own.

So, if an anglerfish can rise, even after a lifetime in the dark—what’s stopping you?

Maybe, just maybe, we are meant to rise, too.

I hope you choose to go for the sun.

So much love to you,

Emi Sue
