The Silent Force That Shapes You

Have you ever looked at your own life and wondered why you feel the way you do? Why your thoughts take certain patterns, why you react the way you do, or even why your self-image fluctuates? The answer often lies in one place—your influence circle. The people you surround yourself with don’t just exist around you; they become a part of you, shaping how you feel, think, and grow.

Every single person in your life is either adding to you or taking away from you. The energy they bring, the way they speak, their habits—these things slowly seep into your being. If you’re constantly around people who complain, you may find yourself seeing the world through a lens of dissatisfaction. If you spend time with those who uplift and challenge you, your own confidence and aspirations expand.

Your influence circle is more than just a social group; it’s an ecosystem of beliefs, habits, and emotional energy that either nurtures or hurts you. The way your friends talk about success, relationships, and self-worth? That influences you. The way your family reacts to struggles? That sets the tone for how you handle your own. Even the media you consume, the conversations you engage in, and the environments you frequent play a role in the way you see yourself and the world around you.

This concept closely aligns with Stephen Covey’s Circle of Influence, introduced in his book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Covey emphasizes that we should focus our energy on the things we can control, rather than worrying about what’s outside of our power. By consciously shaping your influence circle, you are actively directing your energy toward personal growth rather than letting external negativity drain you. His book dives into how shifting focus to our Circle of Influence—our actions, mindset, and relationships—leads to a more effective and fulfilling life.

Coming to the realization that someone or something is hurting you is hard, but taking action is even harder. It’s difficult to step away from relationships or habits that have been a part of your life for so long. But sometimes, you have to do what is best for you. Protecting your energy and prioritizing your well-being isn’t selfish—it’s necessary. Growth often requires letting go, even when it’s uncomfortable.

So, what are you feeding your mind, your heart, your soul? Who do you give access to your energy? Are they lifting you higher, or are they keeping you stuck? You owe it to yourself to be intentional with your surroundings. If something or someone is constantly draining you, it’s okay to create distance. Your well-being depends on it.

Think about the five people you interact with the most. Do they bring out the best in you, or do they feed your insecurities? Do they push you toward growth, or do they keep you in a space of comfort and stagnation? Influence isn’t passive—it’s a force you can direct.

The beauty of it all is that you have control. You get to choose who and what you allow into your space. So choose wisely, because every relationship, every conversation, and every thought shaped by your environment is either helping you become your best self—or holding you back from it.

So grateful for my Circle of Influence:

  1. For the longest time, I was held back by my own negative mindset, expecting someone to rescue me. I’ve come to realize that true change starts from within—it’s up to us to break free and become our own saviors. Friends either make or break it! Thank you for the reminder.
