I have always wanted to be free.
Free from expectations. Free from timelines I didn’t choose. Free from the small version of myself that I used to shrink into just to make other people comfortable. For as long as I can remember, I’ve wanted to feel weightless—like I could live exactly as I am without apologizing for it.
And lately, I feel close. Closer than I’ve ever been.
But freedom isn’t light right away. Sometimes it’s heavy at first. It costs you things. You have to let go of versions of yourself you outgrew. You have to walk away from people who don’t really see you. You have to stop chasing the life you thought you were supposed to want. And that part hurts. No one tells you that.
But I think that’s why this kind of freedom feels so different—it’s not about escaping. It’s about choosing. Choosing myself, even when it’s hard. Choosing love, even when it’s not what everyone else expected. Choosing careers, friendships, cities, and paths that actually feel like mine.
And still, it’s scary sometimes. Because when you finally get close to the life you always wanted, you wonder: do I deserve this? Will it last? The old voices creep in, reminding you of the rules you’re breaking by living your truth. But maybe freedom is choosing to live anyway—to stay present anyway—even with the fear.
For so long, I thought freedom was waiting for me in some faraway place—once I had more money, or traveled enough, or proved myself in some way. But now I realize it’s been here all along. In the boundaries I set. In the risks I take. In the moments I finally breathe and let myself just exist. Freedom is in the little choices I make every day—the ones that honor who I am instead of who I think I should be.
And maybe that’s why I feel so close. Because I’m starting to trust myself. I’m starting to believe that I’m allowed to live life the way I want to. That I don’t have to shrink, or settle, or carry everyone else’s expectations.
I don’t know if I’ll ever feel 100% “free.” Maybe freedom isn’t a final destination at all. Maybe it’s a feeling that comes and goes, a practice you return to, a way of moving through the world. Maybe freedom is something we catch in flashes—like sunlight breaking through clouds—and the work is just to notice it. To let yourself feel it.
But today? I feel close. I feel like I’m finally stepping into the life that’s mine. And that’s enough.
I am cheering for you.
Love,
Emi Sue
