I just turned 25, and no one tells you that this age doesn’t come with excitement — it comes with bargaining.
Bargaining with time. With change. With the quiet understanding that things will never be exactly the way they were again.
I don’t think I’m scared of getting older. I think I’m scared of what growing up asks me to let go of.
There was a version of life where it was just us.
Where my sisters and I belonged to each other first. Where love didn’t have to be scheduled, shared, or split into pieces. We were a unit. A constant. A place I could always return to without asking.
My favorite part of growing up was doing it with you.
Somewhere along the way, life started expanding. Love started multiplying. Their worlds grew bigger, in the most beautiful ways, and I felt mine shift with it. I want them to be loved. I want them to be chosen. I want them to build full, beautiful lives. And still, there’s a small, honest part of me that isn’t ready for how different it feels. A part of me that misses sleepovers and inside jokes and the unspoken rule that we came before everything else.
No one warns you that growing up isn’t just about independence, it’s about rearranging your heart.
So many things are out of my control right now. Who stays. Who goes. Who becomes a priority. Who time slowly pulls away from you without asking permission. Turning 25 feels like standing still while life keeps moving forward, and you’re expected to keep up without grieving what you’re losing.
I miss being younger in the way that meant everything felt permanent. I miss believing that love didn’t have to evolve to survive. I miss the simplicity of knowing exactly where I belonged.
I know this doesn’t mean I’m being replaced. I know love isn’t finite. I know this is what life is supposed to look like. But knowing something logically doesn’t stop it from hurting emotionally.
Maybe not wanting to grow up is really just not wanting to say goodbye to a chapter that felt safe.
So if you’re in your mid-twenties and secretly wishing you could slow everything down, hold onto your people a little longer, know that you’re not behind. You’re not broken. You’re just human. You’re just loving deeply in a world that keeps asking you to loosen your grip.
I’ll grow up eventually. Just not all at once. And not without missing the way things used to be.
Holding onto everything,
Emi Sue
