You Were a Work of Art.

I think art is what makes something uniquely itself.

A painting is more than paint on a canvas. A song is more than a collection of sounds. A home is more than the furniture inside of it. There is something about the choices, the imperfections, the details, and the feeling that exists within them that makes them different from everything else.

I think people are perhaps the most intricate form of art we get to experience.

What makes you, you is not one particular thing. It is everything that has happened to you and everything you have chosen to carry with you. It is the way you laugh when something catches you off guard, the stories you tell so often that your friends already know the ending, the song you will never skip, the things that make you feel at home, and the things you have quietly outgrown.

It is your personality, but it is also the history behind it. It is the people who loved you, the people who hurt you, the places that changed you, the things you learned, the things you are still learning, and all the little pieces of life that somehow came together to make you the person sitting here today.

And I think there is something beautiful about getting to know someone long enough to notice those things.

At first, you know the obvious parts. You know what they look like, what they do, what they like, what makes them laugh. But as time passes, you begin to understand the things underneath. You learn why a certain place means so much to them. You know what they need when they have had a difficult day. You hear a story from their childhood and suddenly understand something about the person you have known all along.

Sometimes, knowing someone for years still leaves room for discovery. Someone tells you something you never knew, and suddenly a part of them makes more sense. Not because you had them wrong before, but because people are much deeper than the version of themselves they are able to show at any given moment.

Maybe that is one of the most beautiful things about loving people. You never really reach the end of them.

People are constantly changing. We grow, we become softer in some ways and stronger in others, we let go of things we once thought we needed, and we become attached to things we never expected to love. We carry our past with us while still becoming someone new.

And somehow, through all of that change, they are still themselves.

I think we sometimes forget what a privilege it is to know someone deeply. To be trusted with the parts of them they do not show everyone. To know the stories behind the things they love. To recognize the little habits they do not even realize they have. To sit across from someone you have known for years and still discover something new about them.

We are surrounded by art all the time, but perhaps the most beautiful kind is the kind we get to experience rather than simply look at.

The person sitting across from you at dinner. The friend you have grown up beside. The family member whose stories you could tell from memory. The person you once loved. The person you still love. All of them are their own collection of experiences, memories, contradictions, dreams, and little things that could never come together in quite the same way again.

There will never be another person who laughs exactly like them, loves exactly like them, or sees the world from exactly where they stand.

And maybe that is what makes people so beautiful.

Not that they are perfect, but that they are completely their own.

You are not simply your memories, your habits, your mistakes, your favorite things, your fears, or the people you have loved. You are the way all of those things came together. And so is everyone you know.

Maybe truly knowing someone is not about having them figured out. Maybe it is about being curious enough to keep discovering them.

To notice the things other people might overlook. To understand that there is always more beneath what we first see. To appreciate the fact that someone can become familiar without ever becoming ordinary.

Because every person is a work of art.

And what a beautiful privilege it is that, throughout our lives, we get to know so many of them.

Some for a moment. Some for a season. Some for a lifetime.

We may never know every part of someone. We may not even get to stay long enough to see who they become.

But for whatever amount of time we are given, we get to witness something that could never exist in quite the same way again.

A person becoming themselves.

And maybe that is art in its most beautiful form.
